Uppsala Student Union works to promote and build awareness around the political issues that are relevant to Uppsala’s students. Most of our work in this field is related to education policy, housing, equality and financial and social security for students. As the Union’s executive officer and press secretary, I work to promote the interests of the students mostly through:
· Monitoring national and local media and events
· Conducting qualitative and quantitative research of various scope and scale
· Producing a large part of the Union’s political text material, such as opinion editorials, press releases, letters, reports, etc.
· Maintaining good and continual relations with the press and other media
· Compiling background papers and presentations for various issues, mainly to the Union Board
· In cooperation with the elected staff, representing the Union vis-à-vis the Government, authorities, decision-makers and other student organisations
· Serving as the secretary of the Study Committee (Studieutskottet) and other committees and working groups
As Uppsala Student Union’s expert of public and political affairs, I am responsible for keeping the Union staff and the students up to date on current student-related issues, and also for keeping the public and the politicians up to date on how Uppsala Student Union feels about current developments. I am more than happy to assist, should you have questions or suggestions!
My continual media monitoring activities result, among other things, in an internal news feed that I mail out daily (in Swedish). It is called “Dagens studentnyheter” [Today’s student news], and contains current news related to education and student issues. If your Swedish is not too shabby, you are more than welcome to subscribe. Just send me an e-mail at handl(a)us.uu.se.
