Discount Card

There are two national cards for student discounts, the Mecenat card (Mecenatkortet) and Studentkortet.

These cards give somewhat different discounts, but what they have in common is that they both entitle you to travel discounts with SJ/SAS/SL/UL, provided you fulfill certain study requirements. The requirements are that the student must be studying at least 75%, during at least 15 weeks per semester. This also applies to PhD students.

Uppsala Student Union gets information transferred from the University's Uppdok registry on students that are 26 years old or older. However, the transferred files are not always complete, so if you want to be sure or if you want to speed up the student card process, you can hand in your registration certificate yourself at the Student Union reception. Uppsala Student Union will then forward the information to Mecenat, who will issue new cards to those who fulfill the SJ/SAS/SL/UL requirements. This also applies to PhD students, who must have a research activity of at least 75%. You must show a new registration certificate every semester. PhD students must show that they had a research activity of at least 75% last semester and that they are registered for the current semester.

Note that this is irrelevant for students under 26, as SJ's and SAS' travel discounts for youths apply for everyone under 26. SL (Stockholm's local transport) and UL (Upplands local transport) however, require that you study at least 75% to get a student discount, no matter how old you are.

If you are studying 75% and are receiving student aid for at least 15 weeks from CSN, you are entitled to student discounts at SJ and SAS, and CSN will then make sure that the relevant study information reaches Mecenat and Studentkortet, who in turn will send you your (new) student card in the mail.

Mecenatkortet
The members of Uppsala Student Union will receive the Mecenat card in the mail at no extra charge. The Mecenat card will look differently depending on whether or not you are entitled to student discounts on SJ/SAS/SL/UL. In addition, the Mecenat card will give you a range of other student discounts. For more information, check out the Mecenat website or call 031-701 03 10.

Studentkortet
Since autumn 2010, Uppsala Student Union has no further cooperation with Studentkortet.

Temporary SJ certificates
If you are going to travel by train (SJ) and have not yet received your discount card, Uppsala Student Union can issue a temporary SJ certificate, provided that you fulfill the study requirements as explained above. Contact the reception for more information. SJ certificates are also issued by the customer services of Mecenat. With the temporary certificate, you can go to one of SJ's travel shops and get a temporary discount card that is valid for 30 days.

For other travel discounts there are no temporary solutions. You can, however, buy an express cardor get a travel certificate sent to your mobile phone as an mms at the Mecenat website.
