Uppsala student union was formed on March 11 1849 by the student nations to deal with the questions concerning all students irrespective of their different backgrounds. The forming of the student union was the start of a cooperation of many years standing to improve the conditions of the students at Uppsala university and in society.
Over the years, the student union have discussed and pursued issues such as student housing, study support, seats for student representatives at different university institutions, athletic clubs, student discounts on study literature, and the struggle for a student union building of their own. In the 1920s, the paper Ergo was established, which in the 1940s became the official paper of Uppsala student union.

In 1999, in connection with its 150th anniversary, Uppsala student union published an anniversary issue, “Världen i Uppsalaperspektiv. Uppsala studentkår 1930-1990" (”The world through an Uppsala perspective. Uppsala Student union 1930-1990”). The book describes student and university matters in a wide perspective, and it is a gold mine for people with a special interest in these matters. The book is sold at Uppsala student union, among other places, for 150 kr.
Uppsala student union’s symbols and colours
Since the 1950s, the student union has an owl as its symbol and logotype. The owl is surrounded by a chain, a representation of the chain worn by the union’s president at official gatherings. The logotype with the owl can also be found on the union’s standard, stationery and posters.
The student union’s colours are yellow, white and blue. Blue is the official colour of the union’s logotype. Yellow and white are the colours on, for example, the union ribbon which can be bought at the union’s reception. At the reception, you can also buy pins, tiepins and cuff links.
